Itinerary

Day 1: Arriving to Puerto Madryn and Penguins in Punta Tombo

puerto-madryn-patagonia-argentina6.jpgLocated in Chubut Province, around the Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José and just 50 km from Peninsula Valdés, Puerto Madryn is one of Patagonia’s most vibrant cities and a highlight of our Buenos Aires and Patagonia itinerary. With its beautiful main avenue, it’s both an industrial and port city. This region offers Patagonia’s greatest wildlife diversity, home to sea elephants, sea lions, penguins, killer whales, dolphins, and the famous southern right whales. Known as Argentina’s National Diving Capital, its crystal-clear waters reveal a rich marine world. Your journey begins in Trelew, where your private guide will meet you at the airport, take you to Punta Tombo—the world’s largest Magellanic penguin colony—and then to Puerto Madryn for leisure time.

puerto-madryn-patagonia-argentina.jpgDiscover this UNESCO World Heritage Site, located 90 km from Puerto Madryn. The journey itself is stunning, with the sea visible on both sides of the road. The first stop is Caleta Valdés, where you can observe a colony of sea elephants. Continue along the route to reach a spectacular crescent of rocky cliffs overlooking a deep-blue bay and the small town of Puerto Pirámides, departure point for whale-watching excursions. From June to December, southern right whales visit the area, while dolphins, orcas, sea lions, and other wildlife can be seen at different times of the year. Let us know your travel dates, and we’ll tell you what species you can expect to encounter.

patagonian-dolphins-watching.jpegThe Patagonian or Commerson’s dolphin is one of the world’s smallest cetaceans. It has a compact, robust body with distinctive black-and-white coloration. These dolphins usually live in small groups of 2 to 8 individuals, though gatherings of up to a hundred have been observed. Highly active, they swim at great speed and change direction swiftly, especially during dives. Females can reach 1.52 meters in length and weigh up to 60 kilograms. Your excursion begins in Puerto Madryn, traveling 85 kilometers to the Port of Rawson. From there, we start our navigation along the final stretch of the Chubut River, admiring the beauty of the Patagonian landscapes and the abundant marine life.

puerto-madryn-patagonia-argentina8.jpgThis unforgettable experience takes place at Punta Loma, just 16 km from Puerto Madryn. The boat ride to the snorkeling area lasts about 25 minutes, and groups are usually limited to six people. Upon arrival, you’ll enter the cool water comfortably warm in your wetsuit. The boat remains about 20 meters from the colony, but the sea lions, curious and playful by nature, quickly approach to interact. They are gentle and enjoy swimming and playing around visitors in a harmless, peaceful way. The snorkeling activity lasts around 45 minutes, with sea lions present almost the entire time. Sometimes, they even follow you back to the boat an exciting and heartwarming encounter in their natural habitat.
