Itinerary

Day 1: Arriving to El Calafate

Esplendor-Hotel-Calafate

Start your Patagonia Trekking Tour in El Calafte. We welcome you at the airport and transfer to town to check in at your accommodation. You get the rest of the day to enjoy the town and later you have your welcome dinner.

Poincenot Camp
On the second day of the Patagonia Trekking Tour, the adventure begins. After breakfast, we take a 220 km drive to El Chaltén, a small, picturesque village at the foot of the Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre massif. We make a halfway stop to enjoy local pastries and hot coffee. Upon arrival in El Chaltén, we begin our trek. For the next two nights and three days in the National Park, we carry only the essentials in our packs; any items not needed are left at our office and will be waiting for us at our accommodation when we return to El Chaltén on day four.

We hike a gentle slope along the Fitz Roy trail, gaining height over the Río de las Vueltas Valley until the first viewpoints of the Fitz Roy massif, visible after a couple of hours of walking. From these viewpoints, another two hours of easy trekking through bogs and forests bring us to our Full Camp, where we are rewarded with spectacular views of the Fitz Roy spires rising dramatically from the surrounding glaciers.

Walking time: 4 hours
Lodging: Full Camp
Meals included: Breakfast, Box Lunch, Dinner

Full Camps are set up early in the season, so the camp is ready upon arrival. It offers comfortable igloo-style tents for one or two guests, with insulated mats and sleeping bags. The camp also features a spacious dining tent, a kitchen tent, tables, benches or chairs, and a complete set of tableware and kitchen equipment. Sanitary facilities are latrine-style, appropriate for a rural setting.

Enjoy the stunning landscapes of this Patagonia Trekking Tour. Early in the morning, even before the first coffee, we may catch the magical moment when the first light paints Fitz Roy’s granite walls in shades of pink—an experience that alone makes the journey worthwhile. But of course, the day has much more to offer.

After breakfast, carrying only our day gear—parka, gloves, camera, water bottle, and box lunch—we follow the Fitz Roy trail up to Río Blanco, the climbers’ base camp on the mountain’s eastern flank. From there, a steep one-hour ascent takes us to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the National Park: Laguna de los Tres. Its vivid turquoise waters rest at the foot of the massif, offering close-up views of Fitz Roy’s dramatic spires and glaciers. Each wall rises between 600 and 1,500 meters above the surrounding ice fields. Standing 3,405 meters above sea level, Fitz Roy is known as the “King of Patagonia” and is often considered one of the three most beautiful mountains on Earth, alongside Alpamayo in Peru and K2 in the Karakoram Range. We return to camp in the late afternoon.

Walking time: 5–6 hours
Lodging: Full Camp
Meals included: Breakfast, Box Lunch, Dinner

patagonia-trekking-tour-cerro-torre-day-4Today, we hike south through the Lagoons Madre and Hija Valley, descending into the Fitz Roy River Valley, where we join the Cerro Torre trail. The path winds through beautiful beech forests, bogs, and shrublands, eventually leading us to Laguna Torre—surrounded by moraines and fed by the Glacier Grande, which calves into its western shore. It’s common to see wind-driven icebergs floating along the lagoon’s edge. Rising gracefully in the background, the slender 3,128-meter spire of Cerro Torre and the peaks of the Adela Range create a truly breathtaking panorama. In the afternoon, we return to El Chaltén along the Cerro Torre trail, completing the fourth day of your Patagonia Trekking Tour.

Walking time: 5–6 hours
Lodging: Lodge
Meals included: Breakfast, Box Lunch.

patagonia-trekking-tour-loma-del-pliegue-tumbado-day-5One of the most renowned mountains on this Patagonia Trekking Tour is Cerro Torre, rising 1,500 meters high. Located just south of the Cerro Torre Valley, it offers some of the most impressive views of the surrounding mountains, glaciers, and lakes. From the lower terraces to the summit, the scenery is breathtaking—featuring panoramic views of Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, and the spectacular glacier valley that lies between them. From the summit, the reward is an unforgettable view of Paso del Viento and the peaks emerging from the Patagonian Icefield. Depending on the group’s ability, we either reach the lower terraces or continue to the summit—a long but gentle climb over scree slopes. The lower section of the mountain is covered with shrubland and forest. We return to El Chaltén by afternoon.

perito-moreno-glacier-patagonia-trekking-day-7Today, we dedicate this day of the Patagonia Trekking Tour to one of the world’s natural wonders: the Perito Moreno Glacier. This icefield-type glacier descends from the Southern Patagonian Icefield, an immense sheet of ice covering 22,000 square kilometers—making it the third-largest glacial area on the planet, after Antarctica (14 million sq km) and Greenland (1 million sq km). The road takes us right to the glacier’s front, just a few meters from where massive ice blocks thunder into the turquoise waters below. The sound, the movement, and the sheer magnitude of the glacier make this an unforgettable experience.

Meals included: Breakfast

torres-del-paine-national-park-chile-patagonia-day-8Today, the Patagonia Trekking Tour begins early with a six-hour drive to our camp in Torres del Paine. We travel across the Patagonian steppe, following parts of the legendary Route 40 as we skirt the impressive Sierra de los Baguales range, located between El Calafate and Paine. We cross the Argentine–Chilean border at Cancha Carrera/Cerro Castillo, and from there continue our final stretch toward Torres del Paine National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As we approach the park, we begin to glimpse its iconic peaks—Paine Grande, the Horns, Admiral Nieto, and the Towers. Once inside the park, we take a short 1–2 hour walk to get acquainted with the landscape, the wind, and the abundant wildlife: guanacos, lesser rheas, condors, and a variety of wetland and buzzard birds, as well as colorful Patagonian flowers. Afterward, we continue by bus to our camp at the foot of the Paine Massif.

Lodging: Full Camp
Meals included: Breakfast, Box Lunch, Dinner

Full Camps are set up early in the season, so everything is ready upon our arrival. The camp offers comfortable igloo-style tents for one or two travelers, equipped with insulated mats and sleeping bags. patagonia-trekking-tour-base-torres-day-9Early in the morning, we begin our hike toward the bridge over the Ascensio River, the starting point of the world-famous Towers Trail. We warm up with a steep, one-hour ascent that leads us into the valley itself—a narrow, V-shaped alpine valley carved deep into the Paine Massif. A gentle descent brings us to Refugio Chileno, a cozy and comfortable mountain lodge that serves as a good turnaround point for those not wishing to complete the full-day hike. We then continue along a gentle slope, following the riverside through beautiful beech forests. The final climb over a moraine takes us to the Towers viewpoint—a glacial lagoon at the base of the three granite spires rising 1,000 meters above. The breathtaking view (and the climb!) will surely leave you breathless. We return to camp along the same trail.

Walking time: 7–8 hours.
Lodging: Full Camp
Meals included: Breakfast, Box Lunch, Dinner

french-valley-patagonia-trekking-tour-day-10Early in the morning, a one-hour drive takes us to Port Pudeto, where we board the catamaran that crosses Lake Pehoé twice a day. Upon reaching the far side of the lake, we leave any unnecessary items at our tents and set out on the French Valley trail. The path follows the southern slopes of Paine Grande and skirts Lake Skottsberg, leading us after about two and a half hours of steady ups and downs to a hanging bridge over the French River. This breathtaking spot lies at the foot of Paine Grande’s 2,700-meter southeast face to the west, and the distinctive black-capped Horns to the east. We continue for another hour past the Italian Camp to reach stunning viewpoints. After lunch and photos, we retrace our steps back to Paine Grande Full Camp.

Walking time: 5–6 hours.
Lodging: Full Camp
Meals included: Breakfast, Box Lunch, Dinner

grey-glacier-day-11The Lake Grey trail begins in the Pehoé Valley and crosses a series of ridges to reach the stunning Grey Valley. This magnificent valley stretches for 60 km from the Southern Patagonian Icefield, ending where the immense Grey Glacier calves into its namesake lake. The trail skirts the lake, winding up and down the western slopes of Paine Grande and offering some of the park’s most breathtaking views. From higher sections, several viewpoints reveal the southern end of the lake where blue icebergs drift, and the distant peaks above the Grey and Tyndall glaciers. After about two hours, we reach the main viewpoint—a rocky promontory with panoramic views of Lake and Glacier Grey. We return along the same path, crossing bogs, shrublands, and forests. Around noon, we take the boat across Lake Pehoé and continue to our accommodation in Puerto Natales, a picturesque fishing town on the shores of the Última Esperanza (Last Hope) Fjord.

Walking time: 3 hours.
Lodging: Lodge
Meals included: Breakfast, Box Lunch.
