Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to El Chaltén

El-Chalten-hikingUpon arrival in El Calafate, you will be transferred to El Chaltén (approx. 3-hour drive) through scenic Patagonian landscapes. After check-in at Chalten Eco Domes, you can explore the town or take a short acclimatization walk to Mirador de los Condores, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. In the evening, there will be a briefing session about the upcoming trekking adventures, ensuring you are well-prepared for the days ahead.

laguna de los tres_el_chaltenOne of the most famous hikes in Patagonia, this full-day trek (approximately 10 hours) covers 20 km (12.4 miles) round trip, leading you to the stunning Laguna de los Tres with unparalleled views of the Fitz Roy massif. The trail features a moderate-to-difficult ascent, with the final kilometer being the steepest. You will hike through lush lenga forests, cross rivers, and witness incredible scenery along the way. Departure at 8:00 AM, return by 6:00 PM. In the evening, enjoy a well-deserved rest at the eco domes, with an optional visit to a local restaurant.

The trail to Laguna Torre is considered moderate, with gentle inclines and rewarding views of Cerro Torre and its surrounding glaciers. Along the way, you will pass by glacial moraines and rivers, making for an incredibly scenic journey. At Laguna Torre, you can take in the views of floating icebergs and, if conditions allow, observe climbers attempting to summit the peak. Departure at 9:00 AM, return by 5:00 PM. Free evening to relax or explore El Chaltén’s charming town center.

Cagliero-Glacier-ice-trekExperience the thrill of ice trekking on Glaciar Cagliero, an off-the-beaten-path adventure. The excursion includes a 6 km (3.7 miles) hike through the forest, followed by a via ferrata section leading to the glacier. Ice trekking lasts approximately 2-3 hours, where you will use crampons and explore the mesmerizing ice formations. Moderate-to-difficult level. Departure at 7:30 AM, return by 5:30 PM. End the day with a warm meal at the eco domes, sharing stories of your adventure.

From here, you’ll embark on incredible excursions to witness these natural wonders up close, staying at the serene Pristine Camps for an unforgettable glamping experience. Take the transfer from El Chalten to El Calafate (3-hour drive) and settle into your comfortable accommodation at Pristine Camps, where nature and luxury meet in a spectacular Patagonian setting. Free afternoon to explore the town, visit the Glaciarium Museum, or enjoy local cuisine at a traditional Patagonian grill.

The first major stop is near Upsala Glacier, one of the largest in the region, where you will see massive icebergs drifting in the lake. Continuing the journey, you will reach Spegazzini Glacier, known for its towering ice walls, which rise over 130 meters (427 feet). During the tour, you will disembark at the Spegazzini Refuge, a cozy and modern lodge offering spectacular views of the glacier. Here, you can enjoy a warm meal or coffee while taking in the breathtaking scenery. After spending time at the refuge, you will return by boat to Punta Bandera, followed by a transfer back to your hotel in El Calafate. Departure at 7:30 AM, return by 6:00 PM. Departure at 7:30 AM, return by 6:00 PM. Evening relaxation at the Eco Camp.

The trek is approximately 20 km (12.4 miles) round trip, lasting 8-9 hours, with moderate-to-difficult terrain. Along the way, take in views of hanging glaciers and jagged peaks. Departure at 8:00 AM, return by 6:00 PM. Free time to unwind at the camp.

To start this journey, travelers will need to fly into El Calafate (FTE) located just outside El Calafate City. This airport receives domestic flights from Buenos Aires (Aeroparque Jorge Newbery – AEP) and international connections via Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE).

  • Arrival Flight: Traveler flies from origin city to Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) or Aeroparque (AEP), then connects with a domestic flight to El Calafate (FTE).

  • Departure Flight: At the end of the itinerary, travelers will take a domestic flight from El Calafate (FTE) back to Buenos Aires (EZE/AEP) for onward international connections.
